Field Experiences

The opportunity to apply what you learn in your coursework is vital to becoming a competent, fully licensed teacher. The middle secondary graduate certificate program includes a six credit hour extended field experience in North Carolina approved sites (10-16 weeks) in order to meet North Carolina DPI Requirements for licensure.

The program director will work with students to secure a placement near their residence. The field experience is entitled CI 5900. Students take this course at the end of their graduate certificate program. Lateral entry teachers may be placed in their own classrooms for CI 5900. Those who have been teaching in their own classroom for a year and a half prior to CI 5900 may be able to complete a one credit hour portfolio option. During CI 5900 the EdTPA will be completed to demonstrate teacher competencies and meet the New North Carolina licensure requirements.

To request a school placement, complete the CI 5900 School Placement Request Form (DOCX, 18 KB) and email to Dr. Taylor at taylorjs@appstate.edu.

Once you have received your placement, register for CI 5900. Complete the Internship Inventory Sheet (DOCX, 17 KB) and email to Regina Parnell at parnellrd@appstate.edu.
